Discussion featuring UW-Parkside Professor Laura Gellott (emerita, History)
We were unable to show the regularly scheduled film, Charlie’s Country (Australia, 2013) on December 3-6, 2015. Instead, we showed Pride (UK, 2014) which was scheduled for February 25–28, 2016. This has opened up a unique opportunity to offer our patrons a more in-depth look at the miners’ strike by showing a recent documentary, The Enemy Within, and having our own scholar of European history, Professor Laura Gellott (emerita, History), comment on both films and help place the events surrounding the strike into a broader historical perspective. Because some patrons may not have seen it in December, we are including two showings of Pride. All of the screenings of Pride and The Enemy Within are FREE and open to the public.
The Enemy Within
Feb 26 | 7:30 pm
Feb 27 | 5 and 8 pm
Feb 28 | 2 pm
In 1984, a Conservative government under Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher declared war on Britain's unions, or what she later referred to as "the enemy within." Against all the forces the government could throw at them, 160,000 coal miners and their supporters took up the fight. Weaving together interviews of key players with a wealth of rare and never before seen archival footage, the documentary draws together personal experiences––whether they're tragic, funny or terrifying – to take the audience on an emotionally powerful journey through the dramatic events of that year. It is ultimately a universal tale of ordinary people standing up for what they believe in.
